Derek Lasini’s Chevy Makes Big Look Good

Wheeling, and specifically rockcrawling, are most popular in Western states. With an abundance of public land, 4x4 shops, and other people to go wheeling with, it is easy to see why.

Derek Lasini lives in Chicago, so when it came time to build his 2001 Chevy Silverado he didn't have the luxury of choosing between four local shops that specialized in fullsize trucks. Instead, he did research online and in magazines like this one to build the truck himself.

The Chevy started as Derek's daily driver 10 years ago when he was in college. The modifications started innocently enough with a body lift and 33-inch-tall tires.

After he graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and began his career, he had more disposable income to turn his truck into the vehicle he always dreamed of. He gathered parts like the Dana 60 front and 14-bolt rear axle and built his own spring hangers. Then, because he didn't have a garage, Derek cut out the IFS and swapped in the solid axle in his friend Ian Boyce's driveway over a long weekend!

The upgrades have continued over the years, and Derek even has a garage to work in now. He has no plans to own a tow rig or a trailer; he continues to drive his Silverado all over the country to go wheeling. The truck is easy to drive at freeway speeds, which is good since there isn't much wheeling close to Chicago. Derek hasn't let that stop him from not only building the truck of his dreams, but also using it is every chance he gets.
