Pickup Truck and SUV Suspension Flex Testing
To kick off Pickup Truck and SUV of the Year 2020, we traveled to T&J Performance Center in Orange, California, where we tested each vehicle's suspension travel on the company's RTI ramp. Ramp Travel Index (RTI) is used to quantify a vehicle's articulation in relation to its wheelbase and is measured by driving one of each vehicle's front tires up the ramp until the opposite rear tire breaks traction. The distance traveled is measured in inches and divided by the vehicle's wheelbase. We lined up the competitors and ran each of 'em up the ramp, recording the precise results.
Fastest Trucks and SUVs of 2020
Next, we moved to the track where we gathered some hard pavement numbers on the trucks and SUVs. We measured acceleration (0-60 mph) and braking (60-0 mph) on each vehicle using GPS-based equipment. This was also a chance for our 11 judges to begin analyzing each vehicle from its four-wheel drive activation systems and leather stitching, to the presence (or absence) of recovery points and skidplates.
To finish off the day, we assembled the convoy of pickup trucks and SUVs and drove toward the mountains where the off-road portion of our testing would take place. Highway time gave us an opportunity to observe road noise, fuel consumption, cabin comfort, headlamp projection, and also how easy it was to navigate each vehicle's smorgasbord of techy knobs and dials.
Four Wheeler's 2020 Pickup Truck and SUV of the Year test continues as we drive into the craggy and boulder-littered canyons, sandy hills, water crossings, and snow found in our local mountains.
