2020 Dakar Rally Well Underway in Saudi Arabia

The 2020 Dakar Rally started Sunday in the Saudi Arabian port city of Jeddah. Saudi Arabia is a new venue for the event, which has been held in South America for the last several years. Saudi Arabia has invested millions in infrastructure to host the Dakar Rally.

Stage 1 took drivers from Jeddah to Al Wajh. Casey Currie is one of the American drivers campaigning a Can Am Maverick for Monster Energy. This is Currie's second year running in the Dakar Rally. He sits seventh in the rankings. The Red Bull Off-Road Junior team is banking on the success of American Mitch Guthrie Jr. in the UTV class.

Frenchman Stephane Peterhansel won Stage 4. The rally veteran is running a Mini for the X-Raid team. Peterhansel has 13 career Dakar Rally victories. Peterhansel is going for a 2020 win after a disappointing 2019 DNF. Despite Peterhansel's latest win, X-Raid teammate Carlos Sainz maintains the Dakar Rally lead.

Absent from the 2020 Dakar Rally is American fan favorite Robby Gordon. Gordon is sitting out this year's event to focus on building his own brand of UTVs. However, American drivers Robbie Pierce and Bobby Patton are in Dakar making their rally debut. Pierce and Patton are campaigning a Toyota Hilux Overdrive. Patton is part owner of the Dodgers baseball franchise. Pierce comes from Mastercraft Safety.

There are a total of 12 stages in the two-week-long Dakar Rally. Fourwheeler.com will keep you updated on the latest news from the event.
