2021 Ford F-150 PowerBoost Gets a Big Ol’ Lift to Hybrid High Heavens

All work and no play makes the 2021 F-150 PowerBoost a dull toy.

COVID-19 might have squashed the 2020 Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) Show's in-person plans, but it's not stopping Ford from showing off the custom vehicles it commissioned for the Las Vegas show. This includes BDS Suspension's take on the 2021 Ford F-150.

Arguably, the most notable update made to Ford's 2021 full-size truck is its newly available gasoline-electric hybrid powertrain, which combines a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 engine with an electric motor to deliver a healthy 430 hp and 570 lb-ft of torque. Predictably, BDS Suspension's F-150 SEMA truck relies on this powertrain (better known as PowerBoost in Ford lingo) for momentum.

Not only is the hybrid the 2021 F-150's most powerful and torque-rich powertrain option (for now, at least), it also nets the truck the most powerful iteration of the Blue Oval's onboard generator, dubbed Pro Power Onboard. With the ability to generate as much as 7.2 kW of electricity (when so-equipped), the hybrid's built-in generator all but eliminates the need to lug an accessory generator around.

In other words, the F-150 hybrid is a true work tool. Further making that case is BDS Suspension's decision to fit this high-end F-150 Limited SuperCrew with a toolkit, plasma cutter, welder and welding table, band saw, grinder, drill press, hammer drill, and impact gun. But who wants to think about work when ogling a show truck made for SEMA?

Don't worry, because BDS Suspension also fits plenty of off-road-ready pieces to this four-wheel-drive pickup. A four-inch lift, custom front skid plate, Fox-brand coilovers, an air suspension kit, 20-inch Method 304 Series wheels, and a set of 35-inch tall Mickey Thompson mud tires ensure this four-door truck is ready to play in the rough stuff. In order to make the most of its driver's and passenger's time off the beaten path, the BDS Suspension F-150 comes fitted with a Yakima bed-mounted rack with an awning and mounts to hold the likes of a stand-up paddleboard and a bike (one of each is fitted to the truck, too).

The truck also sports plenty of additional exterior lighting to improve visibility on the trails at night, while camping chairs and a tent, as well as an electric grill, are onboard to make the most of any overnight outings. Furthermore, a backlit Ford badge on the truck's grille, exterior-mounted storage containers, special BDS Suspension graphics, a Ford Performance rear-differential cover, and a chrome-tipped Borla cat-back exhaust ensure this truck packs the looks and sounds to match its capabilities.

No doubt, BDS Suspension's upgrades to a PowerBoost-equipped F-150 proves that efficiency and off-road fun can live together in harmony.
