2020 Jeep Gladiator JT with a Wrangler YJ Twist: Inlander at the 2019 SEMA Show
2020 Jeep Gladiator with Wrangler YJ grille and some old-school flare
Jay Velthoven, GM of Steer Smarts in Plymouth, Michigan, wanted to build a 2020 Jeep Gladiator JT for the 2019 SEMA Show, but he didn't want it to look like the other umpteen-hundred Gladiators that were also going to be there. Jay wanted his JT to stand out, to be different; he wanted it to be a one-of-a-kind. Jay enlisted the help of Greg Henderson of Unofficial Use Only and they came up with a plan—redesign the front of the JT and graft in a custom Wrangler YJ grille and square headlights. To further the out-of-the-box build, they added some old-school flare to the truck with a custom double-single rollbar and a bunch of 6-inch round KC lights with the yellow and black Daylighter covers. For those of us that grew up back-in-the-day, this brought back many memories of our younger years; it's refreshing when some trends from the past make an appearance in the here-and-now. We love this truck for so many reasons. Thanks, Jay, for building an awesome JT and for making sure it wasn't just another cookie-cutter-bolt-on-Barbie SEMA show Jeep.
A ton of man hours and creative design went into the grille on Inlander. Greg Henderson is a talented fabricator. Notice the curved lines of the bars in the grille, reminiscent of the Jeep JT/JL lines. The front bumper is a Motor City Aftermarket M1 bumper which houses a SuperWinch Talon 9.5 SR winch with a Factor 55 Flatlink.
Again, Greg Henderson stepped up to the plate and created this custom double-single rollbar. We love the old-school feel of some of the elements on this 2020 Jeep Gladiator.
Under the hood is a Magnuson supercharged 3.6L V-6 that is backed by the 850RE 8-speed automatic and NV241 transfer case. They upgraded the OE battery to the Optima Yellow Top and added an S-Pod to handle the extra lighting.
They replaced the stock front axle with the Ultimate Dana 60 and also added 5.38 gears and an E-Locker. Steer Smarts Yeti steering components make this 2020 Jeep Gladiator JT a sweet drive on- and off-road.
The rear axle was also upgraded to the Ultimate Dana 60 with E-Locker and 5.38 gears. Transferring power from the supercharged engine to the differential are Adams driveshafts.
The running gear and suspension have been beefed up. The addition of a 3.5-inch Rock Krawler lift paired with 9200 Bilstein shocks provide Inlander with plenty of clearance. The Steer Smarts end links were featured in the SEMA new products showcase this year.
Another nostalgic touch on the Inlander 2020 Jeep Gladiator are the custom graphics, which are reminiscent of the Jeep Wrangler YJ Islander package. Instead of the island theme graphics of old with the blazing sun, Jay went with mountains for the interior back country trips Inlander is built for. Rock Slide Engineering Step Sliders provide additional rocker protection.
The dash of the Jeep Gladiator has remained mostly stock, however, one air vent was sacrificed for the boost gauge for the supercharger. The seats have been redone using Katzkin leather and Dixxon flannel in a black and red plaid design.
Meaty 39.5x16.50-17LT Pitbull Rocker tires on these sweet polished Dirt Life Roadkill beadlock wheels set off this build to perfection.
There's more old-school cool with the pre-runner style spare tire setup. A color-matched Power Tank is mounted to the rollbar, and two rear-facing 6-inch KC Pro 6 lights bring the extra lighting total to an even dozen.
