Mud Claims Smittybilt’s Jeep's U-joint on the Stampede Trail at Ultimate Adventure 2019

Whoops! Ultimate Adventure 2019 Edition

Disjointed U-Joint
U-joints are used on drivelines and front axleshafts in order to transfer power at an angle. There are two schools of thought on U-joints. Some people want the strongest ones possible, while others feel that they are easier to swap out than a broken differential and make a good fusible link. The G2 CORE 44 front axle under the front of Smittybilt's JL uses huge 1350 Series U-joints, but one of the axle U-joints still gave up the ghost in the mud on the Stampede Trail. That isn't a huge problem, but the yokes on the axleshafts also spread out and made it impossible to remove the stub shaft through the knuckle without beating it out. Ryan Kennely did just that, plugging the axletube and running in three-wheel drive for the rest of the trip until the axleshafts and U-joint could be replaced. It didn't seem to slow him down much!
