American Convoy LJ Soft Tops
A high-end soft top for Unlimited TJs.
Not all new products that we show you on FourWheeler.com are necessarily new. They may be a reimagining or improvement on an old design, or a product that is new to us even though it may have been produced for a few years or more. American Convoy LJ Tops, high-end soft tops for LJ (2003-2006) TJ Unlimited, fall firmly in both categories.
There's nothing new about soft tops, and these tops have been patented and around for a while (but we missed them). With soft tops, as with any good product, there is almost always room for improvement, room for cream at the top. Truth be told, American Convoy's tops have been inspired by decades of Jeep, military, and other 4x4 soft tops with an eye toward utility and durability. Utility can be found in most soft tops, but durability is a feature often lacking from mass produced soft tops, both from the factory and from the aftermarket. With years of use, even the best made plastic bits and gizmos can grow brittle, break, and fail.
The owner and designer of American Convoy Tops grew tired of these failures and decided to build his own top. The result is an over-engineered utilitarian top designed and built for a unique line of Jeeps that seem to hold a special place in the Jeep ecosystem. This is not a cheap Jeep top, and that's not the point. The point is to make a product that works as a system that will last as long as the Jeep. If the fabric part of this top tears or degrades to the point that it will no longer work, the fabric is replaceable, but the rest of the top's hardware should last a lifetime or two.

American Convoy's end goal is also not to get rich repackaging inexpensive products at high profit margins. And the company assures us they don't make a ton of money on the $2,550 top. The point of the veteran-owned company is to build a Jeep soft top that lasts using high-quality American-made products that becomes a system that is more than a top, but rather an upgrade to your LJ. That's a business model that won't get you straight A's in business school, but it yields a product that most off-road enthusiasts would want to spend their money on. The top does not include a header bar (PN 51238-01), factory-style door surrounds, or front doors.
Features of the American Convoy LJ top
-The top features a six-piece design for versatility and functionality. The top can be configured in several different ways. You can zip and roll up the side windows or remove them entirely. You can roll up the rear window by itself, roll up the entire rear panel, or use the zipper to remove the whole rear panel, giving the Jeep a Safari-style look. You can also take off the fabric part of the roof on a perfect day to expose the military-style frame.
-Zippers are all straight, leaving the struggle of zipping around corners behind with your last top.
-There are very few straps to contend with, which makes for ease of install and reduce flapping noise.
-The fabric is heavy-duty sailcloth, durable and tear resistant on the trails. Fabric is double layered at all contact points to reduce noise and movement.
-American Convoy's all-steel, powdercoated frame construction is made to take heavy abuse and outlast any soft top frame on the market. There are no aluminum rods to bend and no plastic ends to break with this top. You can grab the top or the top frame and rock the vehicle back and forth.
-The top mounts securely into factory hard top and soft top mounting points (requires drilling two factory-style holes).
-All hardware is Grade-8, and the mounting rails give the top a seamless, factory look.
-Manufactured, assembled, fabricated, and sewn in the U.S.
