Overland K20 Build: Cummins 6BT-Powered Adventure
Diesel power and fullsize backcountry fun.
Here are a few reasons to drool over Ken Smith's 1971 K20 overland build: the mustard-yellow patina. Falken Wildpeak M/T tires in the 35-inch variety. The heavy-duty 2001 Ram 2500 chassis underneath the patina'd body. And the 24-valve 5.9L Cummins 6BT that turns diesel fuel into overland fun. Ken joined us on the 2019 Overland Adventure East, and his 1971 K20 was packed to the hilt with adventure gear. Have a look at some of the items that make his overland K20 build unique.
Though it's not the stock powerplant, the Cummins 6BT provides plenty of power and torque to get the K20 through the trails.
Falken Wildpeak M/T tires sized LT315/75R16 handle contact with the trails. Ken's wheels are the stock 16-inch steel rally wheels.
Ask Ken about his suspension modifications, and he'll point you toward the coils and shocks that came stock on the 2001 Ram 2500, the truck that donated its chassis to live beneath the K20 body.
Up front sits a Warn VR12-S winch ready should the big truck find itself stuck.
Out back, Ken's Dana 80 is stuffed with an ARB Air Locker and 4.10 gears for enhanced traction.
Traction in the front is bolstered by the Detroit locker within the Dana 60.
There's enough storage space under the bed cap for all necessary overland gear as well as the platform and mattress that Ken and his wife, Charla, use for backcountry slumber.
