Is the ZT Knives 0707 the Lightest, Sleekest Pocket Folder Yet?

A high-end knife that’s able to work but exudes luxury.

Some pocketknives are like an old all-iron 4x4 pickup with a carbureted engine that never breaks down. They're not fancy, but they'll always get the job done. Then, others are like an exotic supercar. They're made of exotic materials, packed with technology, and weigh less than a feather. So let's get this out of the way right now: If you're looking for a burly heavy-duty work knife that can chop bone or hammer nails, then the new Zero Tolerance 0707 knife is not for you. It's really more of a supercar knife.

Zero Tolerance 0707 Overview and Materials

The ZT Knives 0707 is super lightweight at 2.3 ounces, thanks in part to the carbon fiber and titanium handle.

The 0707 is the latest ZT Knives pocket folder to hit the market, and it spares no expense in shooting to be one of the sleekest and lightest offerings in the ZT catalog. With a high-strength 3.5-inch CMP 20CV stainless steel blade, the ZT Knives 0707 features a partially machined carbon-fiber handle on one side and a titanium handle on the other. A titanium lock bar maintains strength, and an ergonomic gripping shape and a beautifully sleek drop-point blade shape that's almost stiletto-like in its profile make the 0707 feel like a nimble, precise instrument. The overall open length of 8.25 inches is definitely full size, but the 0.43-inch-thick handle and 0.121-inch-thick blade make it almost delicate in operation. The 0707's uses super-lightweight materials and doesn't have a full metal frame, instead relying on the rigidity of the carbon-fiber and titanium handles spaced by KVT ball bearings at the pivot and twin barrel spacers at the clip end to provide a bantam 2.3-ounce weight.

The drop-point CMP 20CV blade is exceptionally fine and only 0.121 inch thick.

Zero Tolerance Tuned Detent System (TDS)

The Tuned Detent System (TDS) places a detent on the carbon-fiber handle side opposite the titanium liner lock, so if your thumb or fingers depress the liner lock when actuating the flipper, the blade will still open.

One of the drawbacks we found in reviewing some of ZT's other knife designs was that if your grip covered the lock bar as you were trying to flip open the blade, the pressure exerted on the lock bar made it difficult to impossible to open the blade. It was really more of a problem for left-handed opening, during which the thumb is placed high on the lock bar exerting the most leverage on the detent. In right-handed opening, the fingers are generally halfway down the lock bar and don't exert as much pressure but still could impeded blade opening. ZT's solution to this is its new Tuned Detent System (TDS,) which places the detent on the opposite side of the lock bar in the handle, allowing ZT to tune the knife opening to work smoothly even with pressure on the lock bar, and it does actually work. We were able to flip the blade open while holding the handle with a firm left-handed grip placing the thumb right at the top of the lock bar.

Zero Tolerance 0707 Practical Review

The ZT Knives 0707 features high-quality KVT ball bearings for long life and smooth operation.
The titanium handle features machining that created a slip-proof gripping texture as well as an ergonomic shape.
The carbon-fiber handle is partially machined to provide a comfortable grip contour and has a weight-relieving window at the KVT ball bearing.
The pocket clip is reversible for left-hand carry, but you've got to remove both barrel spacer screws and move the rearmost spacer out of the way before you can swap it. We left our tester set up for right-hand draw.

For starters, the ZT Knives 0707 pocket clip rides high up on the handle for a very deep carry. This is good if you don't like your knife partially sticking out of your pocket, but it also places the 0707's 4.6-inch length deeper into contact with other things in your pocket like your phone or keys. Thankfully it's not a very thick and bulky knife, so it's not really an issue in most cases. The ZT Knives 0707 does not feature assisted opening, so you've really got to deploy the flipper forcefully to overcome the TDS detent and flip the blade open to its full locking position. The problem is the detent is fairly strong and the flipper is somewhat small, so at first it took a great deal of pressure on the flipper to get the knife to snap open and lock. After carrying it in regular use for a couple weeks, the detents broke in a bit and the knife got easier to flip open.

We can't stress how delicate this knife feels in the hand. A combination of its super light weight, thin blade profile, and slim handle make it feel more like a surgeon's scalpel than a big, hefty work knife. That said, the blade doesn't flex, and the plain, non-serrated edge is razor sharp and more than up to fine tasks. The drop-point blade comes to a super-fine point, with the spine machined down in thickness down to the grind line, enhancing the delicate impression.

But it's an impression only, as the ZT Knives 0707 is rigid, solid, and capable.

Zero Tolerance 0707 Bottom Line

The stonewashed blade finish will look great for many years of hard use. As with all ZT knives, the 0707 features a lifetime warranty, and if it ever needs sharpening or repair, just send it back to Zero Tolerance.

If a big, heavy, chunky work knife is a pair of bib overalls, then the ZT 0707 is a dapper three-piece suit. This is a going-out-on-the-town, dress-up knife you'd expect to be paired with a $10,000 watch and other super-high-end everyday carry finery. It's not something you'd expect to see somebody on the job site opening bags of cement with, but then again, it would probably be up to the task. We can't fault the street pricing of around $250 because the build quality and materials are beyond top notch. But for us, the ZT Knives 0707 is an augmentation to our everyday working knife arsenal more than it is a do-all, be-all, off-road, camping, and survival workhorse.
