Testing Toyo’s new Open Country Radial Tire

We recently had an opportunity to review Toyo Tires' new Open Country SxS tire. Released in the summer of 2019, the Open Country Radial was designed specifically for side-by-sides.

First of all, the tire is big. At first glance when picking up the tires from Toyo's warehouse, we thought the staff had brought us the wrong pallet of tires. A quick look at the packing slip proved us wrong. The tire comes in a 32-inch diameter. Our next thought was that the Open Country SxS should have no problem tackling any obstacle we throw at it. Once we got the tires mounted on our brand new 15-inch Raceline wheels and installed on the Polaris, it was time go testing.

The tire features hook-shaped tread blocks for traction in many conditions, including sand, mud, and rocks. The tread actually wraps onto the sidewall for extra grip. The sidewall is also bruise and abrasion-resistant which prevents damage in extreme conditions.

We hit a variety of terrain out near the Parker, Arizona desert. Some of the trails in the area are rough and rocky, while others feature high speed sandy washes. We were pleased with the performance of the Toyo Open Country SxS. The tire performed in the rocks with plenty of gripping power. The large footprint of the tire allowed us to roll right over boulders with no issues. The toughness of the compound and sidewall gave us confidence and took away the worry of rocks pinching the rubber, resulting in a dreaded flat. The sandy washes were the most fun. We opened up the throttle on the Polaris to high speed. The tires rolled right through the sand with zero issues.

Overall, we give the Open Country SxS a thumbs up. Its larger size and toughness is a perfect addition to your UTV. For further proof the Open Country SxS is worthy, Toyo's off-road racers use this same tire on their race UTVs.
