Ram 1500 Gets Prepped to Ram (or Plow) Snow
That Name Again Is Mr. Plow
The current Ram 1500, Truck Trend's 2019 Truck of the Year, presents itself as a luxuriously smooth, powerful, and refined pickup truck. Combine this demeanor with its handsome, traditional, and not at all controversial styling (in contrast with the new Chevy Silverado or—gulp!—the Tesla Cybertruck), and one might be tempted to let it fly under the radar. There's just nothing to fuss about thanks its chameleon-like nature, which enables it to adapt seamlessly to any context. It's perfectly suitable as the family "car," reliably powerful as a tow rig, comfortably poised as a commuter—and now it's expertly equipped in the commercial world as a hard-working snow plow truck. Sure, it can wear a bunch of hats in the same week.
The Snow Plow Prep Package for the 2021 Ram 1500, which better equips the half-ton Ram for the added stress of running a snow plow on the front, was announced at the National Truck Equipment Association's (NTEA) Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana. "As part of Ram's commitment to continuous improvement within the segment, we now offer a Snow Plow Prep package for Ram 1500 customers," said perfectly named Ram chief Reid Bigland in a statement. "Ram has taken a larger presence in the commercial vehicle market, and this offering is the latest expansion of our hard-working trucks."
What does the Ram 1500 Snow Plow Prep Package include?
It includes a 220-amp alternator to keep up with the electrical demands of snow-plow hydraulics, a special wiring harness, and a defroster-equipped rear power sliding window. Plow mounts necessitate ditching the active air dam. The actual snow plow, mounts, and controller are sold separately.
Which 2021 Ram 1500 trucks can be ordered with plow prep?
The 2021 Ram 1500 Tradesman, Big Horn, and Laramie models can be Snow Plow Prep'd; as you might expect, these are the lowest available trims. The trucks have to be 4x4 models, because snow. Engine options include the 5.7L Hemi V-8 (and eTorque variant) or 3.0L EcoDiesel V-6 (basically, the 3.6L V-6 won't be put to plowin'). You cannot get a Rebel, Laramie Longhorn, or Limited with the plow goodies.
How much does the Ram 1500 Plow Prep Package cost?
The optional package price is a reasonable $195 and will be available later this year.
