Has Overlanding Gone Virtual? The Overland Expo West Has

Mark your calendars for the *Virtual* Overland Expo West, in addition to the real thing.

It may seem that actual overlanding and virtual overlanding are polar opposites. The former implies doing while the latter implies watching. We don't really know, though, because virtual overloading is not something that comes up very often. However, for better or for worse, the beginning of 2020 has brought about a shift in how we do things, and that shift hasn't spared the overloading community.

In case you haven't updated your calendar, the 2020 Overland Expo West event in Flagstaff, Arizona, has been rescheduled to July 24-26, 2020, and the 2020 Overland Adventure has been rescheduled accordingly. In addition to the real thing in July and to hopefully placate antsy adventurers in the month of May, the Virtual Overland Expo has been scheduled for Saturday, May 16—the same weekend the traditional event was to be held.

The Saturday event will showcase what's to come during the real, in-person event in July, but also includes educational seminars, video showcases of adventure rigs, one-day-only show specials and discounts from exhibitors, prizes and giveaways, exhibitor product demos, and a sample of the Overland Film Festival. That means you could win some cool stuff from the comfort of your living room—or from the road if you happen to be out adventuring that Saturday.

You can also sign up to "reserve" a spot in a virtual campground by submitting your adventure rig or motorcycle in full camp set-up from past Overland Expo events or other overlanding adventures. You better believe that this is another opportunity to win some prizes.

The virtual 2020 Overland Expo West is free, but the Overland Expo Foundation is taking donations to aid local COVID-19 relief efforts.

Overlanding may have gone digital for one day, but overall, it's pretty safe to say that real-life overland adventuring is here to stay and is only going to grow. Soon enough, we will all be able to gather around a campfire again to share stories, enjoy nature, and devour a meal together when social distancing suggestions relax and more state and national parks reopen.

After the Virtual Overland Expo West on May 16, mark your calendars for the whole Overland Expo Event Series: rescheduled real-life Overland Expo West 2020 in Flagstaff, Arizona (July 24-26, 2020); Overland Expo Mountain West in Loveland, Colorado (August 28-30, 2020); and Overland Expo East in Arrington, Virginia (October 9-11, 2020).
