Ultimate Adventure 2019 Episode 3, Kennecott Mine and Killer Camping #UA2019

It's Day 3 of Ultimate Adventure week on Motor Trend's YouTube channel youtube.com/user/MotorTrend and get ready for Episode 3. With three days of trail under our tires, Ultimate Adventure was due for a road day. But it wouldn't be Ultimate Adventure if we only drove on pavement. The group left the sleepy town of Glennallen and soon hit an undulating gravel road that snakes along the raging Copper River. As the road literally ends, we reach the once-bustling, now dormant Kennecott Copper Mine. When the mine closed in 1938 the employees just loaded onto transports and left, dropping all the tools of their trade. Thanks to the Kennecott Mine's extremely remote location, it was left undisturbed for decades until it opened as a historic attraction. The Ultimate Adventure participants loaded into shuttles and zipped up the mountain past black bears crossing the road, abandoned Willys Jeeps and M-151s, and up to the receding glacier that flanks the Kennecott Mine where we gawked at the tallest wooden building in North America (14 stories tall), marveled at the massive machinery in the power plant, and walked through living quarters before heading back out the way we came, coasting into Glenallen on vapors. Well, most of us were on vapors - the Bronco was bone dry and got towed in by the Derange Rover. Our campsite for this night was pocketed aside the Alaskan Pipeline, deeply away from pavement so the Ultimate Adventure needed low-range 4-wheel-drive to get there and by the time we pulled in to make camp and cook dinner it was already dark. But that's the way it goes on Ultimate Adventure.
