Ultimate Adventure 2019 Episode 4, Denali Highway and Into the Wild #UA2019
Ultimate Adventure tackles the Stampede Trail in Alaska
Many are familiar with the Christopher McCandless story of Into the Wild. Well, on Episode 4 the Ultimate Adventure partially retraces his ill-fated steps and you join us on Ultimate Adventure week on Motor Trend's YouTube channel youtube.com/user/MotorTrend. After awaking at our campsite next to a lake flanked with bear and moose track and completely surrounded by blueberry bushes, the Ultimate Adventure fired up cold engines and headed back down the trail leading to the road where we journeyed to the start of the Denali Highway. Wildfire smoke partially obscured the epic views from the Denali Highway but in no way diminished the experience for Ultimate Adventure of driving one of the most famous stretches of road. We encountered all sorts of wildlife along the way as we drove past the entrance to Denali National Park and dumped our extra camping gear to lighten the load for the Stampede Trail. The Stampede Trail is no joke, with very deep water crossings, incredibly tough lengths of mudded field, and tight snaking overgrown sections requiring finesse and skill to navigate. While it was too unsafe to cross the Teklanika River to visit the infamous Bus 142, the Ultimate Adventure group did make it to the river. Or at least, a very fast-moving, deep offshoot of the Teklanika River. With darkness approaching rather than tempt fate we turned around and did it all over again, eventually reaching our campsite around midnight. A good rest wasn't in the cards after a long Day 5, as Day 6 would require an early start. But that's a story best told on Episode 5.
