Ultimate Adventure 2020 Returning Reader: David Tucker! #UA2020
David Trucker and his super reliable FJ40 return for another go at Ultimate Adventure!
Yeah, it's a Japanese 4x4 with an American GM drivetrain and a mishmash of later-model Land Cruiser axles, but the whole thing is reliable as a Swiss watch. This is actually the third Ultimate Adventure for which Dave Tucker has received an invite. We originally voted him in for UA2018, but his '65 FJ40 wasn't finished. Dave kept his hat in the ring and got the nod to join us as an invited reader on Ultimate Adventure 2019 in Alaska last year. It turned out, inviting Dave twice was a good decision because he went largely unnoticed on the trip. We don't mean that in a bad way; it's just that Dave, his co-driver Rob Bonney, or the Land Cruiser never had any troubles. They just quietly motored through all the hardest terrain we could throw at them last year, never made us wait on them, and had their stuff sorted and dialed in at a professional level. In fact, the only time Dave had the hood up was to clean some mud off the air filter, which got doused pretty good on the Stampede Trail.
Unless you're not familiar with how the invited reader thing works on UA, it's the Cronies who actually select the returning reader. They're the ones who are tapped to pull winch lines, stay behind and help fix stuff, and in general, babysit those in need of babysitting. In general, getting the Crony nod of approval in the form of Returning Reader selection is one of the more prestigious "awards" in this off-road hobby. So, well done to Dave and his well-built '65 FJ40. We're sure the simple TBI 350 and TH350 transmission, Advance Adapters Orion HD T-case, and 4.10-geared, ARB-locked FJ62/FJZ80 axles won't have any trouble turning some 37-inch Falken Wildpeak M/Ts on UA2020.
