Ultimate Adventure 2020 Invited Reader: Derek Lasini! #UA2020

Is this pickup too clean for UA2020?

It's like the old saying goes, you can't win if you don't play. One guy who has played the Ultimate Adventure Application game over several years is Derek Lasini. In 2018 the selection committee really liked his truck despite our concerns that it might be too clean to get bounced off the tight, tree-cluttered trails we were planning on hitting in New England that year. Regardless, we voted Derek and his big blue Chevy into our Dirty Dozen list in 2018. He didn't apply for 2019 due to his wedding (smart man) but he was promptly back with an application for UA2020. Derek's case just goes to show that persistence pays off and you never know when the UA formula will call for what you've got.

This year Derek's super-clean 2001 Chevy Silverado 1500 will be in the thick of the UA action. Truth be told, we run into Derek almost every year on the Fullsize Invasion Run in Moab, so we know he's capable of making long road distances in the big fullsize trail machine. With a swapped-in 4L80E transmission and Northwest Fab EcoBox in front of a burly Ford NP205 we don't think transmission strength or low-range gearing will be any problem, especially given that those Ford NP205s have 32-spline front and rear output shafts. And with a super-stout pair of axles under the framerails, Derek shouldn't need to worry about breaking. The 1979 Ford Kingpin Dana 60 is one of the best junkyard-sourced decisions any trail builder can make, and a GM 14-bolt is the king of strength-per-dollar when it comes to junkyard rear axle selection. Couple all that great drivetrain stuff with a well-thought-out suspension and a lot of time behind the wheel, and we're glad to have Derek aboard representing fullsize pickup off-roaders everywhere.

If you want a shot at UA next year, go find the "Ultimate Adventure Registration Is Live!" button on the UA home page at the Four Wheeler Network. Inside you'll find the application pdf. Simply fill that out, add a couple good high-res images of your vehicle, and email it in to us. And be sure to stay tuned to fourwheeler.com/ultimate-adventure to follow updates on the UALRJ as it comes together. And don't forget to watch all the UA2020 event coverage on our website as well as social media with the #UA2020 hashtag for the latest on what the UA gang is up to as the event draws closer!
