Ultimate Adventure 2020 Invited Reader: Travis Farmer! #UA2020

This year we’re getting free candy in a van down by the river on UA2020!

OK, now that we've gotten the "free candy" and living in a van down by the river out of our system, we're pleased to welcome Travis Farmer and his somewhat crazy 1985 Chevy G10 van. The concept of 4x4 vans are nothing new, and with the growing popularity of "overlanding" welcoming more and more into the 4x4 van life, it isn't surprising to see moderately built vans out on off-road trails. But outside of a few hardcore devotees like Tiger LeBrun of Quigley Motor Company and a handful of others, there really aren't many examples of super hardcore off-road van builds that are out tearing up the hardest terrain. So, between Quigley becoming a full-fledged UA sponsor this year. and with Travis' '85 G10, it looks like UA2020 is gonna change that.

For starters, Travis decided the wheezy factory drivetrain just wasn't going to cut it, so out came the boat anchor smog-era powerplant and in went a modern 5.3L LS engine with an overdrive 4L60E automatic. To ensure the transmission isn't overtaxed when the big van is out climbing trail obstacles, an Atlas II with 3.8:1 low range was installed, and a set of 5.38s were loaded into a ball-joint '99-'04 Super Duty Dana 60 front and shaved GM 14-bolt rear. Powertrax Grip Loks provide traction in both diffs, and a suspension comprised of simple Skyjacker 6-inch Chevy truck springs up front and a shackle flip with Chevy truck springs in the rear do a fine job of getting enough clearance to swing 40-inch tires without needing to completely chop every stitch of sheet metal. Travis had only owned the van for about four months at the time he sent us his application, but he's since finished the buildup and has given the vehicle a few shakedown runs. Be sure to watch #UA2020 to see how it fares in the wild.
