Shifty Shifty for the Ultimate Adventure Long Range Jeep #UA2020

Part 21, Shifters for the trans and T-cases

Verne SimonsAuthor, Photography

Transfer cases are magical boxes that give us several things that we need and love.

For one, they split power to the front and rear axles. As you know, that is a must-have for any and all 4x4s. Also, some transfer cases, those that we especially like, allow for additional low range gear options—often 1:1 and somewhere between 2:1 and 3:1 (with some lower ratios possible).

That's gearing that truly separates real off-road vehicles from those with just the additional traction of all-wheel drive (think Subaru or Toyota Rav4). Our ideal setup—and many an off-roader's— is a transfer case with more than two low-range gear ratios. That means you can select gearing specific to your off-road situation.

Enter Offroad Design out of Carbondale, Colorado. They have been in the thick of stacking low-range boxes for full size 4x4s for what seems like forever and a day, and we've told you about their Magnum Underdrive boxes generally mated to an ORD prepped New Process 205 Transfer case. That's a combination that yields us 1:1, about 2:1, roughly 3:1 and combines to give us just over 5:1 low range ratio. That's rad.

Still, all these transfer case ratios are only available with functioning shifters. Luckily ORD sells a couple of different shifter kits for the Magnum, NP 203 based doublers, and the venerable NP205.

Likewise, our Aisin AX-15 transmission from Quadratec needs to be shifted, and truth is, this brand transmission comes with a shifter installed, but still requires a shift cane, also available from Quadratec, to row through the gears. Here is some info on all the shifty shifters that made their way into the 2020 Ultimate Adventure Long Range Jeep.
