Building Shock Hoops for the 2020 Ultimate Adventure Long Range Jeep #UA2020

Part 8, jumping through hoops is shocking.

Going off-road is much more fun with a suspension that functions, and by that we mean one that works. Banging and clattering down a dirt road or trail with metal hitting metal and shucking parts with aplomb is something we'd rather not do, especially when it comes to building the 2020 Ultimate Adventure Long Range Jeep. Also, we like to do things a little bit differently to stand out from the norm and see if we can come up with something that works a bit better. If not, we can always push pause and redo something.

We also have a few tricks up our sleeves, including tons of help and support from our 2020 Ultimate Adventure Suspension and Shock, Skyjacker Suspensions. Unlike many, Skyjacker Suspensions, as a company, actually uses its off-road suspension products, and we do, too (as the past several Ultimate Adventures will prove). With that we requested and received a set of Skyjacker's Curt LeDuc series coilover shocks intended for a Jeep JK. Our plan is to fit them to the Dana Ultimate Dana 60 axles, which are held in place with our custom setup Skyjacker Suspension control arms and track bars.

Front Shock Hoops

With the front control arm points fixed, we've moved on to setting up the Curt LeDuc Series Skyjacker Suspension coilovers. We will start with the front and heavy tack-weld everything in place until we are sure that everything is placed properly. The first thing to do is to remove the coils from the shocks, decompress the remote reservoirs, and determine the collapsed length of the shocks. That allows us to set up the shock mounts with the suspension at full bump, or with the front and rear axles as high as possible relative to the vehicle's frame. Then we can build mounting tabs for the axle end of each shock and the hoop end, set the shock hoops, attach the compressed shocks, and use a jack to cycle the suspension to check for interference. This is a process where things may have to change along the way. Here's our start, and we will update how things needed to change once everything was cycled or before that when we realized that something we thought would work would need to be modified.

Rear Shock Hoops

The process for the rear is nearly the same as the front. Our only concerns are that the rear frame rails on a TJ are wide. That helps preserve interior space, but it means we are fighting for space between the frame rail and the nice, wide 38/13.50R17 Falken WildPeak MT tires are using. This means building what we think will work, heavy-tack weld everything in place, test fit it, cycle the suspension, and make changes if necessary. That sometimes means rebuilding the same parts multiple times with little tweaks
