Falken WildPeak MTs on TR Beadlocks for the 2020 Ultimate Adventure Long Range Jeep #UA2020
Part 12: We love the smell of new tires in the morning.
New tires and wheels are one of the best things about being a car or 4x4 nut. The smell in the air, the feel of the fresh, sharp edges on the tread, the little mold hairs that haven't yet worn off Yeah, even we will admit that sounds a little weird, but please don't act like we're the only ones who love a set of new tires and wheels. To those that must, we know you are lying because statistically tires and wheels are one of the first modifications folks are likely to make on a new-to-them 4x4.
Ultimate Adventure asks a lot of many of the parts we use, but none interface with the environment like the tires and wheels that touch the ground everywhere we go. These tires must be durable and effective at grabbing the ground, supporting the rigs, and keeping things moving forward, come what may—paved roads, dirt, mud, ice, snow, sharp rocks, and water. For several years this task has fallen to the Falken WildPeak MT. We are running a set of five of their 38 x 13.50R17 WildPeak MTs on the 2020 UA LRJ.
Tires are useless without wheels, and as with tires we need specialty wheels that are up to the extreme use and abuse that Ultimate Adventure vehicles are subjected to daily while on the trip. Beadlocks are just about a must, and a company named TR Beadlocks Wheels by TrailReady Products LLC makes some of the best beadlock wheels money can buy. We've run them on several Ultimate Adventure rigs over the years with great success. Unlike most overseas wheels, the TR Beadlocks are the only Flowformed off-road wheel while others use a low-pressure casting method that is inferior to these.
Mounting the Tires to the Wheels
Generally, a ton of beadlock wheels and tires get dismounted and/or mounted just before Ultimate Adventure. UA 2020 is no exception. Like with many aspects of the 2020 Long Range Jeep build, we are happy to lean on friends for help. Our buddy Chad Campbell is one of our best and oldest friends (technically, he's basically the same age we are, but we've known each other since 1995 or so). For reasons we don't understand—and we suspect Chad regrets—Chad volunteered to help us out last Saturday. So, while we were working on assembling other bits of the UALRJ, we set Chad on mounting the five tires to this beautiful set of Flowformed TR Beadlock wheels that we had powdercoated in a beautiful military flat green.
Cycling the Suspension With Tires and Wheels
With the tires and wheels all mounted up, we got a chance to dry-fit the wheels and tires and then cycle the suspension to check for clearance.
