Custom High-Clearance Rock Sliders for the 2020 Ultimate Adventure Long Range Jeep #UA2020

Part 13: rock slider time machine.

Rock sliders or rocker guards are a must-have for any rig that sees heavy trail use assuming you don't like wrinkled sheetmetal and doors that used to open as intended. We are OK with some wrinkled sheetmetal but would rather keep as much as possible straight. Rock sliders protect one of the more vulnerable parts of a car, the sheetmetal that runs down the side of the car between the front and rear tires. You drive over a big rock or log, and the rocker might just slam into it.

Jeeps have large flat rockers that are like magnets to damage. Luckily, people have been building rocker guards for Jeeps for what seems like eons. There are weld-on or bolt-on tubular rocker guards and formed plate rocker guards that hug a Jeep's rockers. Our plan was to build some of the latter but to incorporate some of the frame mounting strength that tubular rockers afford. Also, we figured out a way to pick up about an inch in the rocker area. We did this some time ago before we were 100 percent go on Ultimate Adventure 2020, so some of the photos you'll see here will take you back in time. For our rocker guards, we will use several sections of 3/16 or 0.188 plate and tubing to make our rock sliders. Check out the video of the rock sliders/rocker guards and the still photos showing what we did.

To start, we trimmed off the lip of the factory LJ body tub using a strip of blue painter's tape as a guide. Then we sectioned a piece of 2x5x 0.188-wall rectangular tubing into two pieces long enough to cover our rockers. From there we added plate to the inside of each piece and dry-fit the rocker guards. Then we added plate to the bottom of the Jeep's rockers so we can tie in the cage and the tub in several places. We still need to build runners to tie the rocker guards to the frame. Our plan for those is to build some boxes that weld and/or bolt to the frame.
